Proverbs 1

Proverbs 1

Today we are reminded that without Christ, God's wisdom can turn into a spirit of judgment and condemnation.

Jesus once spoke of an unclean spirit that leaves a person and then wanders through dry places, only to return and find the house swept clean. So it brings seven spirits more wicked than itself, leaving the person worse off than before. "This," he said, "is the fate of a generation that seeks to be cleansed of sin but not filled with the Holy Spirit."

For example, Lady Wisdom cries out in the streets, offering counsel, but those who reject her wisdom will find themselves judged and condemned by her and anyone who accepts it.

Consider Jonah, who preached repentance to Nineveh. The people were cleansed of their sins, but they too rose in judgment and condemned the next generation. It is the same with the Queen of the South, who traveled from the ends of the earth to hear Solomon’s wisdom. However, she too rose in judgment and condemned anyone who rejected her counsel, and so it will be the same for anyone who accepts such wisdom.

However, Jesus declared, “One greater than Jonah is here. One wiser than Solomon is among you.” The wisdom he offers is not human wisdom, but the counsel of the Holy Spirit. Anyone who accepts his wisdom is taught to show forgiveness, compassion, and mercy as a true measure of God's justice and righteousness.

Christ took the punishment of sin upon himself so that accountability comes not by judging others but by the will of our heavenly Father: Jesus said, “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven are my mother, my brother, and my sister.”

So let us not just be houses swept clean of sin, but rather let us be filled with the Holy Spirit so that the wisdom of Christ may dwell richly within us. Sin is not just judged according to the wise, but it is also judged according to God's justice, who sees right through them.
